Treating genital warts

How to use Aldara cream

Each sachet of Aldara contains 250mg of cream. You should use the cream 3 times a week, on alternating days. For example, Monday, Wednesday and Friday. You should always leave a gap of at least 1 day between applications. It’s best to put the cream on before you go to bed, as it needs to be left on for 6 to 10 hours.

To use, open a sachet and apply a thin layer of cream on the affected area. You might not need to use the whole sachet every time.

Rub it in until the cream disappears. Leave the cream on for 6 to 10 hours, do not bathe or shower during this time.

After 6 to 10 hours have passed, wash the area with mild soap and water.

The cream can cause condoms and diaphragms to weaken and break, so do make sure to wash it off before any sexual activity.

Talking to your partner about genital warts

Telling the people you have sex with about your warts can be nerve-wracking. But if you’re informed about the virus and prepared for any questions they might have, the conversation can go smoothly.

Genital warts are very common in the UK, and most people will have the virus without seeing any symptoms, as our bodies can be very good at fighting it off. By knowing your status, using treatment and talking to your partners, you’re taking responsibility for your health and taking care of the people you have sex with.

What are the side effects of Aldara?

You might experience some skin irritation when using this cream. This generally is not anything to worry about and will go away once you’ve finished the treatment.

The irritation can include:

  • damage to the top layers of skin in the area

  • redness

  • flakiness and swelling

  • hardening under the skin

  • small open sores

  • a crust that forms during healing

  • small bubbles under the skin

  • a burning sensation, itching or pain

If any of these side effects bother you, talk to the doctor who prescribed this medication. If your treatment came from Fettle, contact our clinical team by replying to any of our text messages.
