Trichomoniasis: the facts
When should I test for trichomoniasis?
Trichomoniasis, or trich, is an STI caused by a small parasite called Trichomonas vaginalis (TV)
We recommend you test for trichomoniasis if you have symptoms, like:
unusual genital discharge that has a strong, fish-like smell
itching, pain and irritation around the vagina or head of the penis
Other symptoms of trichomoniasis include
pain when peeing or during sex
needing to pee more often than usual
discharge that’s a different colour to usual
Test results are most accurate 1 to 4 weeks after you’re first exposed to the infection. So, if you’re worried about a particular time you had sex, do the test at least a week after that.
How can I avoid trichomoniasis?
Trichomoniasis is passed on during vaginal sex or sharing sex toys. It’s not thought that it can be passed on through anal or oral sex.
You can reduce your chance of catching or spreading trichomoniasis by:
using internal or external condoms during sex and to cover sex toys
not sharing sex toys and washing them between uses
Is trichomoniasis serious?
If you do not get treatment for trichomoniasis, it can cause complications. It can increase your chance of getting other conditions, like HIV and bacterial vaginosis. And it can develop into pelvic inflammatory disease - an infection in the womb, fallopian tubes and ovaries - or inflammation of the prostate gland.
If you think you might have trichomoniasis, you should get tested. Treatment is straightforward, and treating the infection early can help you avoid more serious complications.
Getting treatment
Treatment for trichomoniasis is a course of antibiotic tablets. It’s important you finish the full course of antibiotics even if you start feeling better. Do not have sex when you’re taking treatment and for 1 week after, as you can still pass it on during this time.
If you get a positive trichomoniasis result from a Fettle test, you can get treated for free at a sexual health clinic. We will help you find a local clinic.
How accurate are the STI tests?
Our simple home STI test kits are highly accurate when you:
wait the recommended window period before you test
follow the kit instructions carefully
complete additional tests in a clinic setting, if recommended by our clinicians.
Your samples are sent to our partner laboratory to be processed by specialist technicians. We use similar tests that are used by many NHS clinics.
If you are experiencing any STI symptoms, you should visit your local sexual health clinic for further testing and examination.
