Will using contraception delay my fertility?

Contraception will not make you infertile or damage your fertility. If you use the contraceptive injection (Depo-Provera or Sayana Press), once you stop using it there can be a delay in your fertility returning. With all other methods of contraception, your fertility will return immediately after you have stopped using them.

Once you stop using the contraceptive injection it can take up to 18 months for your fertility to return. This is because it can take a while for your body to metabolise and clear the hormone. For some people, this can take longer than others. Because of this, we do not recommend using the contraceptive injection if you’re planning to become pregnant soon.

This is the case no matter how long you use the injection. You could use this method for 6 months or 6 years, it can still take up to 18 months for your fertility to return.
