How can we help?

How frequently should a person take an STD test?

If you are sexually active you should take an STI test once a year, even if you have no symptoms.

Some STIs have no symptoms so without getting tested you may not even realise you have one. There are many other situations which may require more frequent testing:

  • if you have multiple partners, you should consider getting tested every three months

  • if you are starting a new relationship, it is good practice that both you and your new partner get tested

  • if you have noticed any STI symptoms such as discharge or rashes, you should get tested

  • if you had unprotected sex with someone who does not know their STI status or who has an STI, you should get tested. For more information on when to test for specific STIs, read our “When to test for STIs” post.
