Contraception cover for up to 8 years with Mirena coil

Many people love the coil for it’s long-lasting, fit-and-forget protection from unplanned pregnancy. And now you can use a Mirena coil for contraception cover for up to 8 years. It’s the longest lasting reversible contraception available in the UK.

New research has found that the Mirena coil can keep on preventing pregnancy for 8 years. So in January 2024, the FSRH (Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare) changed the licence and the guidance so that you do not need to change your coil as often.

The great news is, this does not just apply to new Mirena coils. If you’re using one already, your protection has been extended. Check the date you were fitted with the coil and then work out your new removal date - 8 years after your fitting.

Of course, this does not mean you have to keep it for 8 years. If you do not want it anymore because of side effects, or because your contraception needs have changed, you can book a removal at any time.

This extension does only apply to the Mirena coil, not other brands. If you’re not sure what type of coil you have, get in touch with the clinic that fitted it for you. They’ll be able to tell you which type of coil you have and how long it will work for.

And the change only applies if you’re using your Mirena for contraception. If you have one to help manage heavy periods or as part of HRT, you will still need a new Mirena after 5 years.
