How do couples avoid STIs while trying for a baby?

Before you start trying for a baby, it’s a good idea for both partners to get tested for STIs.

It’s important to know about any infection and start treatment before you have unprotected sex.

Chlamydia, gonorrhoea and syphilis are easily treated. The right treatment means that you will not pass these infections between you when trying to become pregnant.

If you’re living with HIV, you will not pass the infection on to your partners as long as you are:

  • on treatment

  • have an undetectable viral load

If you have a hepatitis B or hepatitis C infection, talk to your doctor before you try for a baby. This is because the infection can be active or inactive. If you have an active infection, your doctor can help you with options for getting pregnant without putting your partner at risk.
