Can syphilis be cured without using penicillin?

Syphilis cannot be cured without antibiotic treatment, usually penicillin. For those with penicillin allergy, there are other treatments available including doxycycline, azithromycin and ceftriaxone The length of antibiotic treatment will depend on how long you have had syphilis for.

Untreated syphilis can cause serious health problems for both men and women. It is important that you complete the full antibiotic course.

You should avoid any type of sexual activity until two weeks after you finish your course of antibiotics. This will prevent you passing on the infection to someone else or getting re-infected with syphilis again.
